“Communities On the Line”: TRUST Act Campaign Social Media Toolkit
During the next month, organizations with the Campaign for a Welcoming Illinois will be making calls to Governor Rauner urging him to sign the TRUST Act. This is how we’re going to make sure Governor Rauner knows that our communities are supportive of the TRUST Act, and that the TRUST Act becomes law in Illinois!
This toolkit is to provide the basic information on making calls, and also provide some tips and tricks for getting the most out of your digital outreach!
CALLING THE GOVERNOR: Script and phone numbers
It’s super easy to call Governor Rauner and ask him to support the TRUST Act. The whole process takes about a minute. One update for this campaign: We are asking people to make TWO calls: one to Gov. Rauner’s Springfield office, and one to his Chicago office.

“Hello, my name is ____. I am an Illinois resident I am calling to ask that Governor Rauner to sign the Illinois TRUST Act, SB-31. This will protect our 4th amendment rights, and will make me, my family and people I care about more secure in Illinois. Can you pass this message along to the Governor? Thank you.”
The staffer answering phones is usually very nice and courteous. They record the issues that people are calling for and make a tally to give to the Governor. This is why it’s important for us to show that people SUPPORT the TRUST Act, because there will certainly be others calling asking the governor to oppose.
MAKE A VIDEO! - Maximize your outreach
Making a video for social media can help to drive calls during your call week and maximize your outreach. The videos should be short and quick, and demonstrate how easy it is to make a call. People respond to videos that they see online, PLUS, Facebook prioritizes videos in a user’s feed, meaning it is more likely that your fans will see the video without searching for it.
You can record a video on your phone and post it afterwards, OR you can use the Facebook LIVE feature and record the call as it happens.

MEMES AND SOCIAL MEDIA SHARING
Social media is a great way to amplify your ask and bring your supporters into the action. Here are some pointers for social media posts:
- Use an image (or video) - show your community members in action!
- In all posts, please remember to use the #WelcomingIL hashtag, and use “Communities on the Line” in the post text (“We’re calling because our communities are on the line,” “Our communities are on the line, Governor Rauner. It’s time to sign the TRUST Act”)
- Tag Governor Rauner when mentioning his name. (use the symbol “@” and start typing in “Rauner” and his page should automatically appear)
- If posting on Twitter, please incorporate “@GovRauner” and “#WelcomingIL” into all posts
